DESPITE FIRST-TIME PROBLEMS, NOMA 1 IS GREAT SUCCESS
This publication doesn't ordinarily report events after they happen, but in the case of NOMA 1, we're making an exception.
Nearly 1100 gays and lesbians converged on Rogers Mountain Ranch May 9 for an old fashioned picnic. The scenery was gorgeous, the weather was perfect and everyone was in a great mood. This was the first event sponsored jointly by the Southern California Gay Bartenders Association and the Los Angeles Pool League, with proceeds earmarked for a Gay Scholarship Fund. The food was short and the bar lines were too long, but guests overlooked those shortcomings and generally had themselves a fabulous time. Savannah, the country/western band, performed live, and plenty of people discovered they could squaredance, encouraged by the band's irresistible toe-stomping music. There were games, a tug of war, a nature trail (which proved to be very popular), a camel and a brahma bull to ride, Fess Reynolds with his trained pony act, disco music by DJ Paul Wuerth of The Bushwacker and much more.
More than $1200 in gift certificates were donated by the following businesses: Academy Restaurant, A Different Light Bookstore, Ah Men/Shop for Men, All American Boy, Backhouse Mens Wear, Coral Sands Hotel, David's Restaurant, Frog Pond Restaurant, Gallery Inn Restaurant, The Gym, Hollywood Century Theatre, International Male, Keith's Restaurant, Kitchen Stuff, Macho Men's Wear, Ollie & Heidi's Flowers, Paradise Packing Company, Perfect Pattie Restaurant, Pines West Hotel, Planaterrium, Plaza Flowers, Pleasure Chest, Prime Cuts Records, Ron's Records, Safari Bar & Buffet, Shaklee Products, Small Pleasures, Sports Locker, Study, Sweet 118/Hairstyling, Tom's Cafe, Toy Tiger Restaurant, West Hollywood Hat & Baggage, Vista Theatre. Prize drawings were held May 14 and certificates mailed to 75 win-
ners.
NOMA 1 sponsors also want to extend special thanks to the following: Stud, Griff's, Tom's Cafe, Frog Pond, Westside and Woody's Hyperion. Also to Chet Rogers who, despite harrassment from neighbors, still opened his heart and his ranch to us; to Susan McGrievy, ACLU/Gay Rights Chapter attorney, without whose intercedence with the Ventura County Board of Supervisors and Sheriff there may not have been a NOMA 1; to John Flynn, Supervisor, 5th District and Polly Bee, Administrative Assistant, both of whom cooperated fully in obtaining the necessary county permits for us; to Lee Rabin of the ABC, and to Christopher Street West/Los Angeles. Will there be a NOMA 2? We think
so!
